Happy Holidays in Berlin

‚Ich bin ein Berliner.‘

Well, no, actually I’m not from Berlin, but I’ve visited this town many times and I start feeling like coming home when I step into the train towards our capital city.

I wanted to experience Berlin in winter, right in time for the holiday season. I thought that this trip would be a welcoming chance from the almost depressing everyday life at home. It felt like a dark cloud covered my head lately. So, I figured that I had to go outside, meet friends and be creative. And Berlin was just the right place to realize my plans.

Besides being a tourist and visiting famous places like the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburger Tor and the Alexanderplatz, I was interested in vintage shopping and vegan food in particular. Both interests got covered pretty well and I felt like the happiest girl in the city.

I even got to visit a vegan Christmas Market at the Alte Heimat, which was amazing. For the first time since I decided to become a vegan, I tasted a Belgian Waffle again, and it was heavenly delicious :)

I also went to the Markthalle Neun, a popular place for food vendors from all over the world.

Furthermore, I did some cultural program by visiting the Museum of Photography to see the Helmut Newton exhibition.

But the trip wasn’t just a vacation for me; I also went to Berlin in order to do some photo shoots.

First, I met with the very sweet couple behind Cheesecakes Pinup & Vintage Pictures. Jens and Melli share a huge passion for nostalgia and they express this passion in their photographs. We worked at a vintage hair salon and moved on to the boutique of Fräulein Glitter. Her vintage store seemed like Heaven on Earth to me and I couldn’t keep my eyes off the beautiful clothing and accessories (so much for the vintage shopping, haha).

On the next day, I took a train to Potsdam where I met with one of the best Pin-up photographers I know – Maria Vaorin. I had the pleasure to work with her during my last stay in Berlin and I very much hoped to see her again. We shot some wonderful winter-themed Pin-up photos. I love the way how Maria pays attention to every detail during the photo shoot. I also like the lighting and the retouch of her photos. To me, her work is a true Pin-up art.

On my last day, I got all excited as I stepped out of the bus in front of the Cherrymuffin Studios. I always wanted to visit the photo studio of Spooky Sally and I was euphoric, when she responded to my request. I was overwhelmed by the interior of the studio – wherever I looked, I discovered props like an oversized paper half-moon or a giant wall clock, which we just included in our Silvester-themed photo shoot. We also worked on a different theme, but that’s a secret for now.

Frankly, I have to say that Berlin may not be a beautiful city on the outside, but you’ll soon discover its inner beauty when you stay for a few days and nights. No only was I overwhelmed by the Christmas Lights at night; the whole city seemed to glow due to its multicultural environment and artistic freedom. I want to close this entry with a quote by Franz von Suppé – ‘You are crazy, my child. You must go to Berlin.’

Offen gesagt, Berlin ist in meinen Augen keine Schönheit – zumindest was Äußerlichkeiten angeht.
